What is Dolby Atmos?

Dolby Atmos is a mixing system for production of spatial audio, created by Dolby. It could be used for mixing music of any genre/kind as well as for films. The setup for Dolby Atmos mixing is expensive, especially for beginners in filmmaking. 

Dolby Atmos Mixing refers to the process of creating and balancing audio for a 5.1.2/5.1.4/7.1.2/7.1.4/9.1.4/9.1.6 surround sound system, which includes channels (left, center, right, left surround, right surround, left rear surround, right rear surround) and one subwoofer channel depending on the speaker configuration setup.

Why Dolby Atmos?

In order to improve the audio’s sensation of depth and height, atmos systems can use upward-firing or overhead speakers. This implies that sound can emanate from above and all around you while you’re viewing a movie or playing a game, giving the experience a very lifelike and dynamic feel.

As fancy and expensive it sounds, while setting up the Dolby Atmos studio, we were always asked or given these statements.

It's of no use, Dolby is meant for people who have 15-20 years of experience as engineers, and you as beginners should not venture into something this big.

To be honest, they’re not wrong to comment this way, but we will prove them wrong eventually. As it turns out, DOLBY ATMOS IS THE FUTURE. And we would like for people decide this for themselves.

Despite being around for nearly a decade, immersive audio is still relatively new. Immersion recording and mixing standards are still being developed. The possibilities are endless, and immersive innovators are only beginning to investigate them. 

But still the question: Why is DOLBY ATMOS, the FUTURE remains unanswered. Well check this out.

Dolby Atmos Statistics

According to a 2023 source, over 750 screens across India were equipped with Dolby Atmos, with Mumbai, being a major metropolitan area.

Major chains like PVR, INOX, Cinepolis, and Carnival Cinemas, which operate numerous screens in Mumbai, frequently include Dolby Atmos in their premium auditoriums, such as IMAX, 4DX, or luxury screens.

A 2020 source listed 265 theaters in Mumbai, though not all are multiplexes or equipped with Dolby Atmos.

Conservatively, it can be estimated that 20–30 theaters (individual auditoriums, not cinema complexes) in Mumbai have Dolby Atmos, based on the prevalence of major chains and named examples.

This number could be higher, as smaller or newer theaters may also adopt Atmos but aren’t widely documented.

As you can observe, only ~10-11% of the movie theatres in Mumbai are equipped with Dolby Atmos. We, at Jinesi, want India to prepare and grow for this immersive technology rather than just wait for years before it’s too late.
