Duduk
Robert Schumann very beautifully once quoted:
“To send light into the darkness of men’s hearts – such is the duty of the artist.”
And there’s no better instrument out there than Duduk to bring peace to a world full of mourning souls. The beauty of Duduk lies in making us accept its peace that lasts, and that happiness is fleeting. The sound of Duduk is powerful, it talks to the soul in its own language, incomprehensible to anyone who knows words.
Duduk, a double-reeded wind instrument, originates from the gorgeous lands of Armenia, starting from 1200 BC. The culture of Armenian Duduk music is known to have begun from the first century BC during the reign of Armenian Emperor, Tigran the Great.
The use of duduk in the film “The Gladiator” (2000), starring Russell Crowe, was done by the ingenious composer Hans Zimmer, creating an emotional, comforting blanket you don’t want to get out of.
It also featured in “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (2005)”, which showed a fictional double flute that is actually a duduk. In the TV series, “The Game of Thrones”, duduk music is featured in Daenerys Targaryen’s theme.
In the “Dune: Part One (2021)” and “Dune: Part Two (2024)”, Hans Zimmer has used Duduk to create epicness and grandeur to the extent where you feel you have become a part of Arrakis, a world from the future.
